New publication: Handbook on Rural-Urban Linkages in the Global South

MiFOOD partner Cecilia Tacoli is the lead editor of the newly published Handbook on Rural-Urban Linkages in the Global South (Edward Elgar, 2025). The book offers a comprehensive review of how, in rapidly urbanizing low- and middle-income countries, the links between rural and urban areas, people and enterprises are becoming increasingly intense and complex. With a focus on how rural–urban linkages are being shaped by the intersection of the local and the global, this Handbook illustrates how and where locally specific geographic, socio-economic and political contexts interact with global dynamics.

MiFOOD Director Jonathan Crush and Partner Godfrey Tawardzera contributed Chapter 14, Continuity, complexity, and change: revisiting rural-urban links in post-apartheid South Africa, which revisits the nature of rural-urban links in post-apartheid South Africa, challenging the assumption that the end of apartheid would lead to rapid urbanisation and the dissolution of circular migration.
